Nonprofits We Admire From Afar: Black Men Heal

In our “Nonprofits We Admire from Afar” series, we’re excited to highlight organizations making transformative impacts in their communities, especially those whose missions resonate with Quantum Leap Consulting’s commitment to uplifting individuals and families. This week, we turn our attention to Black Men Heal, a grassroots nonprofit organization founded by Tasnim Sulaiman, dedicated to providing Black and Brown men with access to mental health treatment, psycho-education, and community resources.

At QLC, we understand the power of storytelling for nonprofits. As we work with organizations to improve their data collection plan and implement systems like Salesforce, we emphasize the need to capture and share data effectively. Whether you’re a new nonprofit leader or established in the space, remember: a clear, compelling story can inspire others to join your cause. Data helps you build that story, documenting your impact and setting the foundation for long-term success.

In our weekly series we focus on these five elements:

  • Mission/Vision
  • Who They Serve
  • Programs
  • Impact Report/Achievements
  • Call to Action – Donate!

Vision

Black Men Heal operates on a powerful mission: To provide access to mental health treatment, psycho-education, and community resources to men of color. Healed Men Heal Men. The organization was founded in 2018 to address the inequities of a mental health care system that often fails to meet the needs of marginalized Black and Brown communities. Black Men Heal envisions a future where men of color feel empowered to seek mental health support without stigma, contributing to healthier individuals and stronger communities.

Who They Serve

Black Men Heal focuses on Black and Brown men, a group historically underserved in mental health care. The organization seeks to eliminate barriers to treatment, such as cost, stigma, and the lack of culturally competent therapists, while normalizing mental wellness as a strength rather than a weakness.

Programs

Kings Corner A virtual weekly meetup offering men a safe space to explore mental health topics and connect with others. Hosted by experts, each session provides psycho-education, therapeutic tools, and opportunities for open dialogue on topics like stress management, healthy relationships, and self-care.

Heal with Him A weekly virtual group open to women, focusing on mental wellness topics and relationship-building tools to enhance health and quality of life.

Gun Violence Group Therapy (GVGT) Serving middle and high school youth in Philadelphia, this program addresses the trauma of gun violence through intergenerational workshops and group therapy, aiming to improve mental health outcomes for participants and their families.

Individual Therapy Program Men are matched with culturally competent therapists and provided with eight free sessions to begin their mental health journey. After the initial sessions, 75% of participants continue therapy, a testament to the program's success in building trust and therapeutic alliances.

Impact Achieved

Although I couldn’t find an official impact report, I’ve put together one based on their achievements as highlighted on their website.

What We Admire

We deeply admire Black Men Heal’s commitment to redefining strength and resilience for Black and Brown men. By referring to their participants as “Kings,” the organization reinforces the value and dignity of seeking help. This approach not only addresses mental health stigma but also honors the legacy and potential of the men they serve. Programs like Kings Corner and the Individual Therapy Program demonstrate how thoughtful, culturally competent care can transform lives.

In a world where hurt often perpetuates hurt, Black Men Heal stands as a beacon of hope. Their work is a reminder of the healing power of community and the importance of creating spaces where men can be vulnerable, supported, and empowered.
